Since ancient times, people have thrown coins into water, such as wells or fountains. Why do this? Well, not always by wish. One theory is that silver, which has well-known antibacterial properties, would make the water more sanitary and suitable for drinking. Now, there’s growing evidence that silver may have many other health benefits, too.
Mostly associated with pathogenic bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, they are characterized by their cell envelope, which consists of a thin peptidoglycan cell wall sandwiched between an inner cytoplasmic cell membrane and an outer bacterial membrane that protects them from many antibiotics (including penicillin); detergents that normally disrupt the peptidoglycan of the (inner) cell membrane; and lysozyme, an antimicrobial enzyme produced by animals.
