First introduced in the early 1970s, carbon columns are one of the most effective and widely used technologies in the drinking water treatment industry. Activated carbon has proven to be excellent at filtering taste, odor and contaminants from water. To produce carbon blocks, the carbon is ground into particles ranging from 0.045 mm to 0.18 mm in size.
The carbon column is mainly composed of activated carbon particles and a binder, and the carbon particles can maintain their relatively fixed position. Each tiny carbon particle has a more uniform pore structure, which enables the carbon column to have a higher efficiency in reducing pollutants. The uniform pore structure of the carbon block also increases contact time with the filter media, further increasing the carbon column’s ability to remove contaminants.
Another advantage of carbon pillars over larger carbon particles is that the pore size of the block can be controlled to a size small enough to eliminate bacterial growth within the filter.
